For background on how disputes work in general, see the CFPB dispute FAQ and the FTC article on disputing errors.

Before you dispute

  1. Pull your TransUnion report (or a tri-bureau report) from AnnualCreditReport.com or another lawful source you trust.
  2. Identify the exact tradeline or public record you believe is wrong — account name, partial account number, status, and dates.
  3. Gather supporting documents that explain why you think the entry is inaccurate. See the credit dispute document checklist on Credit Plainly.
  4. Decide your path — online is often fastest, but mail or phone may fit your situation. Use TransUnion's official mail/phone page for current addresses and numbers.

Online disputes

TransUnion's dispute hub usually walks you through:

  • Verifying your identity
  • Selecting the item(s) you are disputing
  • Explaining why you believe the information is inaccurate
  • Uploading supporting documents when the portal allows

Keep screenshots or confirmation emails and note the date you filed.

Mail and phone

TransUnion publishes current mailing addresses and phone options on its official mail-or-phone page (link above). Do not copy addresses or phone numbers from unofficial websites — they go out of date and may be wrong.

If you mail a dispute:

  • Send copies, not originals, unless TransUnion's current instructions say otherwise
  • Use certified mail with return receipt if you want proof of delivery
  • Include your full name, current address, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security number only if required by their current form
  • Redact full account numbers on attachments when possible

After you submit

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, a credit bureau generally must investigate most disputes within 30 days (sometimes 45 if you send additional information during the investigation). TransUnion will typically send a written result.

Track your case using bureau-response-tracking.md.

Reminders

  • A dispute is a request to investigate — not a guarantee of removal or correction.
  • Accurate negative information generally cannot be removed simply because it hurts your score.
  • If the same error appears on Experian or Equifax reports, you may need separate disputes with those bureaus.
