Bureau response tracking

A simple system for logging credit bureau disputes so you know what you filed, when, and what came back. Educational reference only — not legal advice.

Why track disputes

Credit report disputes can take weeks. Without a log, it is easy to forget:

  • Which bureau you contacted
  • Whether you disputed online, by mail, or by phone
  • What documents you attached
  • When the 30-day (or extended) investigation window should end
  • Whether the item was updated, deleted, or verified as reported

Good records also help if you need to escalate or file a complaint with a regulator later.

Minimum log fields

For each dispute, record:

Field Example

Expected response window ~30 days from filing (confirm with CFPB/FTC materials)
Date response received 2026-06-08
Outcome summary Updated to "paid as agreed"
Follow-up needed? Yes — file with TransUnion (same furnisher)

Suggested folder structure (on your computer)

Keep copies of everything. Do not send originals unless official instructions require it.

Reading bureau responses

A typical investigation result letter may say the item was:

  • Deleted — removed from your report
  • Updated — changed to reflect new information
  • Verified as accurate — furnisher confirmed the reporting; the item may remain

If you disagree with the result, federal consumer materials describe possible next steps (for example, adding a brief consumer statement, disputing directly with the furnisher, or filing a complaint). See:

No outcome is guaranteed, and accurate negative information generally cannot be removed simply because it hurts your score.

Tri-bureau follow-through

Corrections at one bureau do not automatically update the others. After a favorable result, pull fresh reports from AnnualCreditReport.com and dispute separately with any bureau that still shows the error.
