IMSN (Indian Muslims Student Network) is an open, grassroots initiative to build a network for Indian Muslim students — across schools, colleges, universities, and countries — to find community, mentorship, resources, and opportunities that are often hard to come by alone.
Many Indian Muslim students navigate their academic and professional journeys without a strong support system tailored to their specific needs — whether that's finding scholarships, navigating identity in unfamiliar spaces, getting career guidance from people who understand the journey, or simply finding others who get it.
IMSN aims to close that gap by building an open, transparent, and community-owned platform — starting right here, in this repository.
If you're an Indian Muslim student — or an ally who wants to help build this — here's why this is worth your time:
- 🤝 You won't be navigating this alone. From choosing the right college to finding your first job, there's real value in learning from people who've walked a similar path.

This is intentionally open-ended, but here are some directions the community could take IMSN in:
- A directory/network of students and alumni across institutions
- A mentorship matching system (senior students/professionals ↔ junior students)
- A scholarship and opportunity board, crowdsourced and verified
- Discussion forums or chapters by city, college, or field of study
- A resource library — guides on applications, interviews, study abroad, etc.
- Regional or campus-level chapters/meetups
- A simple website or app as the public face of the network

🚧 Early stage — foundations only.
Right now, this repository exists mainly as a discussion and planning space. There's no app, no platform, no infrastructure yet — just an idea worth building properly, together, instead of rushing into code.
I want to be upfront about something important: I'm not planning to build this entire thing by myself.
I started this repository because I believe this idea is worth pursuing — but a project like this works best when it's shaped by the community it's meant to serve, not by one person's assumptions. My role here is to:
- Maintain this repository and keep discussions organized
- Make final calls when needed to keep things moving
- Help coordinate contributors and connect good ideas to action
But the direction, features, design, and priorities should come from the community — students, developers, designers, mentors, and organizers who want to see this succeed. If you have skills, time, ideas, or even just strong opinions about what this should look like, this is your invitation to jump in.
Think of this less like "a project I'm building" and more like "a project we're figuring out together."
You don't need to be a developer to contribute. Here's how anyone can help:

To kick things off, here are some open questions the community should weigh in on. Head to the Discussions tab to share your thoughts:
- What should IMSN's first concrete deliverable be? (A directory? A resource list? A Discord/community space? A website?)
- What platform(s) make sense to start with — GitHub Discussions, Discord, a simple website, all of the above?
- Should IMSN organize by region/city, by institution, by field of study, or stay unified?
- What kind of governance should this project have as it grows (maintainers, working groups, etc.)?
- What are the biggest pain points you've personally faced that IMSN could realistically solve first?
As this project grows, a few principles to keep it grounded:
- Community-first — decisions should reflect what students actually need, not assumptions.
- Open by default — discussions, decisions, and progress should be visible and documented here.
- Inclusive — welcoming to Indian Muslim students of all backgrounds, sects, regions, and walks of life, and to allies who want to help.
- Low barrier to entry — you shouldn't need to be a developer to contribute meaningfully.
- Sustainable pace — this is a long-term community effort, not a rushed sprint.
A living roadmap — expect this to evolve based on community discussion.
