📊 Data Professional Survey Analysis – Power BI Portfolio Project

Welcome to my Power BI portfolio project! This interactive dashboard provides a comprehensive analysis of a dataset containing survey responses from data professionals worldwide. It highlights trends in salary, demographics, job satisfaction, career motivations, and more — all brought to life through insightful and user-friendly Power BI dashboards.


📥 Data Source

The dataset used in this project was publicly available and downloaded from the GitHub repository of Alex the Analyst. The dataset simulates survey responses from over 600+ individuals working or aspiring to work in data-related roles such as Data Analysts, Data Scientists, and Data Engineers.


🚀 Project Overview

This project was created to showcase my capabilities in data modeling, visualization, and business intelligence using Power BI. The dashboard serves as an exploratory tool to understand the work and satisfaction patterns of professionals in the data industry.

Project Objectives:

  • Explore compensation patterns by age, education, and geography.
  • Analyze demographics including gender, ethnicity, and role distribution.
  • Understand factors influencing job changes among employees.
  • Present all findings in an interactive, professional-grade Power BI dashboard.

💼 My Role & Responsibilities

This is a solo project that covers the entire lifecycle of a BI dashboard, including:

📂 Data Acquisition Sourced dataset from GitHub (Alex The Analyst)
🧹 Data Cleaning Used Power Query to remove nulls, clean text, and transform columns
🧱 Data Modeling Designed relationships between tables; followed star schema principles
📐 DAX Calculations Created custom measures (averages, percentages, filters, aggregations)
📊 Dashboard Design Developed interactive visuals, slicers, tooltips, and dynamic titles
🧠 Data Analysis Derived key insights and presented user-friendly narratives

📊 Dashboard Features

🎯 1. Demographic Breakdown

  • Gender distribution (Male vs Female)
  • Age distribution and its impact on salary
  • Ethnic representation of respondents

💰 2. Compensation Analysis

  • Average salary by country (e.g., USA, UK, India)
  • Salary trends across different age brackets
  • Salary based on education level

🎓 3. Education & Technology

  • Highest level of education attained
  • Popular programming languages (e.g., C/C++, Python, SQL)

🧠 4. Job Satisfaction & Intent

  • Are employees happy with their current salary?
  • What factors drive them to consider switching jobs? (Better salary, culture, work-life balance, remote work)
  • Role-based job count (Data Analyst, Engineer, Student, etc.)

🕒 5. Other Insights

  • Time spent on flights (related to remote work preferences)
  • Cross-tab analysis of salary vs demographics
  • Custom visuals for storytelling

🧠 Key Insights

  • United States respondents reported the highest average salaries.
  • A significant portion of respondents were unhappy with their current salaries, highlighting career mobility.
  • Better salary, remote work, and work-life balance are the top three reasons people consider job changes.
  • The majority of respondents hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.
  • C/C++ and similar languages are still in demand, though other languages like Python may also be popular.

  • Total Records: 630
  • Key Columns: Age, Gender, Country, Salary, Education, Programming Languages, Current Role, Motivation to Switch, Ethnicity, Job Satisfaction
  • Missing/Empty Rows: Cleaned via Power Query during data preparation

💻 How to Explore

To interact with the full dashboard:

  1. Download the .pbix file from this repository.
  2. Open it in Power BI Desktop.
  3. Use the slicers and filters to explore insights by country, age, role, gender, and more.

✅ No data gateway or credentials required — data is embedded and cleaned within the file.

  • Designing visually appealing and user-friendly dashboards.
  • Structuring data models using best practices for performance and scalability.
