Quick Start Guide

Get your solo FFXI server running in 15 minutes.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure you have:

  1. Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit)
  2. Administrator access to your computer
  3. ~15GB free disk space

Step 1: Install MariaDB

LandSandBoat uses MariaDB to store character and world data.

  1. Download MariaDB (version 10.x or higher)
  2. Run the installer
  3. Set a root password (or leave blank for local-only access)
  4. Complete installation with default settings

Step 2: Download FFXI Client

You need the official FFXI client files (free to download).

  1. Visit PlayOnline Downloads
  2. Download and install:
    • PlayOnline Viewer
    • FINAL FANTASY XI

Note: You don't need an active subscription - just the client files.

Step 3: Run the Installer

  1. Download FFXI_Preservation_Installer.exe from Releases
  2. Right-click → Run as Administrator
  3. Click "Run Checks" to verify prerequisites
  4. Choose your settings:
    • Install Path: Where to install (default: C:\FFXI)
    • XP Rate: How fast you gain experience
    • Mob Difficulty: How strong enemies are
    • Starting Gil: How much money to start with
    • SoloBoost: Enable HP/MP/stat buffs for solo play
  5. Click Install

Step 4: Set Up the Database

After installation, you need to import the database:

  1. Open a command prompt as Administrator
  2. Navigate to the LandSandBoat folder: 
    cd C:\FFXI\landsandboat
  3. Import the database: 
    mysql -u root < sql/main.sql

Or use HeidiSQL/DBeaver to import the SQL files from landsandboat/sql/.

Step 5: Start Playing!

Option A: Use the Desktop Shortcut

Double-click "Play FFXI" on your desktop.

Option B: Manual Launch

  1. Run scripts/launch_server.bat to start the server
  2. Run scripts/launch_game.bat to start the game

First Login

  • Enter any username/password - it will create your account automatically
  • Create your character and enter the world!

Tips for New Players

  1. Trusts are essential - Summon them as soon as you can
  2. Records of Eminence - Accept these quests for bonus XP
  3. Fields of Valor - Find Field Manuals for repeatable XP
  4. Survival Guides - Unlock teleportation points
  5. Home Points - Set your respawn location
