[ENHANCEMENT] Visual Interaction Required

Team, I use the HTML Content visual within Power BI dashboards, and it’s an excellent feature that opens up a lot of possibilities. Thank you for building this!

I’d like to suggest an enhancement request. I’m not sure how feasible it is, but I believe it would significantly improve the overall user experience.

Enhancement Request:
On one of my Power BI pages, I have multiple visuals, including the HTML Content visual, bar charts, and matrix tables. Currently, Power BI’s native visual interactions and cross filtering work across all visuals except the HTML Content visual.

It would be extremely valuable if the HTML Content visual could participate in native Power BI interactions and cross filtering, both:

• From HTML Content to native Power BI visuals
• From native Power BI visuals to HTML Content
• From one HTML Content visual to other HTML Content Visual, when we have multiple HTML Content Visuals in a same page

Enabling two-way interaction would unlock many additional use cases and greatly enhance integration within dashboards.

Hi @akhilduvvuru, and thanks very much! Have you looked at the existing interactivity doc and limitations/considerations to see if it already meets your needs? There are also some examples in the sample workbook (available from the AppSource listing) that you can play with to see how this works in a report.

If there are gaps from the existing supported features, please check #127 to see if the changes we're planning to improve the body/row structure may unblock you (and add any further use cases there for consideration).

I'd also throw in a caveat that, because HTML Content is effectively a sandbox (whereas a purpose-built Power BI visual typically has an established singular use case over its data structure), in combination with Power BI's own rigid rules around interactivity, we're limited in how flexible we can be, so we may not be able to do everything, but it would be good to know what you might need specifically if it falls outside this, to see if we might be able to do something.

@dm-p - Yes, I use Single measure approach in my Power BI Dashboard. So as per doc and limitations/considerations, if we use the single measure approach, the interaction/cross filtering is not possible?

This is correct. Power BI requires row context for interactivity to reconcile across visuals on the page. We have no manual control over what we can filter etc., as for privacy reasons visuals are not permitted to know about the semantic model or other visuals on the page. This is a simplification of the concept but all a visual can do is request Power BI to filter out (or resolve a tooltip or drill through request) based on the specified row(s) from its provided dataset. Power BI will then sort out what happens in the other visuals or report actions on our behalf - the APIs are essentially that simple for us as third party developers. A single measure doesn't contain this kind of information.

The linked issue (when worked on and delivered) may help mitigate the situation for some folks currently using a single measure by giving more control over the overall structure and allow them to be more surgical with the granularity portion and take advantage of these features.
