Track distinction. This specification is normative for the current v4.0.0 GA payload surface. The wire envelope stays at
klickd_version: "3.0"(unchanged crypto and AAD); v4 is signalled inside the payload viapayload_schema_version: "4.0". The previous v3.5.1 release remains valid and interoperable. A separate v4.1 candidate / benchmark / DOI track (e.g. thex.klickdcandidate skill catalog and RFC-010 preview blocks) is not GA, is not tagged or released, and is not normative here.
Claim boundary.
.klickdprovides portable, client-side-encrypted user state and the technical primitives that help a privacy and safety program. It does not provide universal native support across AI clients (compatibility depends on the reader), it does not confer automatic GDPR or EU AI Act compliance (compliance is the operator's responsibility), and it makes no claim of superiority over external benchmarks or competing systems. .klickd is an open file format for portable AI context. It enables a user's conversational history, preferences, expertise state, and project continuity to travel with them across AI models and sessions — without any server involvement.
The current and recommended payload surface is v4.0.0 GA, signalled via payload_schema_version: "4.0". The wire format remains klickd_version: "3.x" with the envelope-v3 layout (crypto and AAD are unchanged from v3.5.1):

The legacy envelope-v2 layout (klickd_version: "2.x", PBKDF2-SHA256, 4-field AAD) is documented in this specification as legacy / migration only. Producers SHOULD emit envelope-v3 going forward; readers MUST continue to accept envelope-v2 files written by older clients (see §Migration Notes (v2.0 / v2.4 → v2.5) and §Migration Notes (v2.x → v3)).
Wire version vs. release version.
klickd_versionis the wire / envelope version of a single.klickdfile ("2.5","3.0", …). The reference SDKs (klickdon PyPI,@klickd/coreon npm) and this specification track a release version (the4.0.xpackaging track for the SDKs; v4.0.0 for this spec) independently of the wire version. A v4.0.x SDK still produces envelope-v3 files markedklickd_version: "3.0"withpayload_schema_version: "4.0"; this is intentional.
v1 addressed AI memory in the educational domain: learner profiles, competency tracking, session continuity between Klickd/Kai sessions.
v2 generalises the format to all domains and solves a universal problem: when a user switches AI models (GPT → Claude → Gemini → Llama), the new model starts from zero. With .klickd v2, context follows the user, not the model.
v2.5 is a non-breaking patch over v2.0/v2.4. It renames four fields for clarity (created_at, kdf_salt, ciphertext, user_preferences), pins timestamp format to RFC 3339 UTC, adds a Threat Model section, introduces normative Validation Requirements, clarifies AAD field ordering, wire format encoding, and versioning policy. Files conforming to v2.0 or v2.4 are backward-compatible with v2.5 readers via the migration notes below.
v3.x (envelope-v3) replaces PBKDF2 with Argon2id, introduces structured kdf/cipher envelope blocks, a 6-field JCS-canonicalised AAD, the normative memory[] array, the ethics and personality blocks, and the §28.8 Soul Handoff rules. v3.4.x adds the §27/§28 learner-experience and advanced-memory fields. v3.5 adds §31 passphrase recovery (BIP39 + Argon2id phrase hash). v3.5.1 lands the ATLAS conformance fixes (canonical cipher.name = "AES-256-GCM", user_preferences typed as string, schema index).

A .klickd file is a JSON document. When encrypted: true, the ciphertext field contains a base64-encoded AES-256-GCM ciphertext. All other top-level fields remain in plaintext to allow routing and version detection without decryption.

v2.5 renames four fields. The renames are backward-compatible within the v2 MAJOR version: v2.5 readers MUST accept the old names when the new names are absent, and SHOULD prefer the new names when both are present.

Migration procedure for file generators: emit the new field names starting with v2.5. Do not emit both old and new names simultaneously; if backward compatibility with pre-v2.5 readers is required, emit the old names and set klickd_version to "2.4".
Migration procedure for file readers: when reading a file whose klickd_version is "2.0" or "2.4", treat generated_at as created_at, salt as kdf_salt, payload as ciphertext, and agent_instructions as user_preferences.
Envelope-v3 (klickd_version: "3.x") is the current wire format. The envelope-v2 examples earlier in this document remain valid as legacy / read-only inputs and are preserved here for migration purposes.

Producer guidance: new clients SHOULD emit envelope-v3 only. There is no requirement to keep emitting envelope-v2 once your reader user base is on v3.
Reader guidance: v3 readers MUST continue to accept envelope-v2 files. The reference implementations auto-detect the wire format by inspecting klickd_version's MAJOR component.

user_preferences is ADVISORY ONLY. It is a preference hint, not a privileged instruction. Implementations MUST NOT allow user_preferences to override platform safety policies, system prompts, or operator instructions. The injection target (system message, developer message, user message, or memory tool) is determined by the platform, not by the file.
user_preferences is a plain-text string intended to be injected as a preference briefing for the incoming AI agent. It should:
- Be written as a direct briefing to the new agent in second person
- Summarise context, current state, and constraints concisely (recommended: under 300 words)
- Include the user's communication preferences
- End with an explicit instruction to continue as if the agent had been there from the start
The quality of the handoff is determined by the quality of this field. Agents generating a .klickd file should treat authoring user_preferences as a deliberate summarisation task, not an automated dump of raw history.

AAD provides tamper-evident integrity over the envelope fields without encrypting them.

All encryption is performed entirely client-side. The .klickd format provides a zero-server storage layer: no data transits through any server during file generation or loading. The file is as secure as the user's passphrase and device.
AES-256-GCM provides both confidentiality (ciphertext is opaque without the key) and integrity (the authentication tag detects any tampering with the ciphertext or AAD fields). If the passphrase, IV, or AAD does not match exactly, decryption fails with an authentication error.
The GCM authentication tag covers the AAD fields: klickd_version, encrypted, domain, and created_at. Any modification to these envelope fields will cause decryption to fail, preventing undetected tampering.
- File theft:
ciphertextis opaque without the passphrase; an attacker who obtains the file cannot read its contents without the passphrase. - Network observer: no data transits any server during file generation or loading; there is nothing to intercept in transit.
- Malicious host page: cannot read plaintext without passphrase entry from the user.
- Compromised endpoint: if the user's device is compromised, the passphrase and plaintext are exposed at the point of entry or decryption.
- LLM provider observation: once the decrypted payload is injected into a model's context window, the model provider processes it according to their own data policies. Users SHOULD assume the LLM provider observes plaintext after injection.
- Coerced disclosure:
.klickdprovides no legal protection against court orders or compelled decryption. - Weak passphrases: PBKDF2-600k is insufficient against GPU brute-force on short or common passphrases.
updated_at/created_atrollback: thecreated_atandupdated_atenvelope fields are not included in AAD and can be rewritten by an attacker without breaking authentication. A host agent that trustscreated_atas a freshness indicator can be tricked into accepting a replayed older file as newer. See rollback-detection guidance in §Validation Requirements.
The .klickd storage layer is zero-server and locally encrypted. The .klickd runtime layer (after injection into a model context) is subject to the model provider's data handling policies. These are distinct and both must be understood by implementors.
- Reject files where the
klickd_versionMAJOR component is unknown or unsupported. - Reject
ciphertextshorter than 16 bytes (cannot contain a valid GCM authentication tag). - Reject malformed base64 in
kdf_salt,iv, orciphertextfields. - Reject files missing any required envelope field (see Field Reference).
- Reject timestamps not conforming to RFC 3339 UTC Z-only format (
YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SSZ). - Use a CSPRNG for salt and IV generation.
Math.random(), time-based seeds, or any non-cryptographic source are NOT permitted. - NOT reuse
(key, IV)pairs. Each encryption operation MUST use a freshly generated IV. - Reject
user_preferences/agent_instructionsexceeding 32 KB (32,768 bytes, UTF-8 encoded). This prevents context-window exhaustion when the field is injected into a model prompt. ReturnKLICKD_E_FORMAT. - Validate UTF-8 encoding (v3.4): Implementations MUST validate that all string fields are valid UTF-8. Non-latin scripts (Arabic, Amharic, Wolof, CJK, Devanagari) MUST be preserved verbatim. Any string field containing invalid UTF-8 byte sequences MUST cause the implementation to return
KLICKD_E_FORMAT.
- Warn the user when passphrase length is fewer than 12 characters. This warning MUST be observable: implementations SHOULD emit it to
stderror an equivalent observable channel, not solely via a filtered warnings API. - Zero the passphrase from memory after key derivation is complete.
- Rate-limit decryption attempts to mitigate online brute-force.
- Rollback detection: persist the file fingerprint
sha256(kdf_salt_bytes || iv_bytes)and thecreated_atvalue of the last successfully loaded file, keyed by file path or origin. On subsequent loads of the same file, reject loads where the new file'screated_atis ≤ the persisted value. This prevents an attacker from replaying an older file with a rewrittencreated_at. The fingerprint MUST be stored outside the.klickdfile itself (e.g., in local app state or a separate.klickd.metafile).
The klickd_version field governs format compatibility. It uses MAJOR.MINOR format.
- Implementations MUST reject files where the MAJOR version is not supported.
- MINOR version increments are backward-compatible within a MAJOR version. A v2.5 reader MUST be able to read v2.0 and v2.4 files (applying the migration notes above).

When a user opens a new AI agent that does not yet have their .klickd file loaded, there is no automatic signal that a profile exists. Without a standard trigger, the user must either remember to mention their file manually, or the context is lost entirely. This is the single highest-friction point in cross-agent portability.

The .klickd format is not restricted to human learner profiles. Any autonomous AI agent — a scorer, a coding assistant, a research analyst, a press writer — may carry a .klickd file that accumulates its domain expertise across sessions. This section defines the Agent Profile extension.
The core insight: expertise is independent of the model that holds it. An agent's accumulated knowledge, validated milestones, and known failure modes can be preserved in a .klickd file and loaded onto any future model — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Llama, or any successor — with full continuity.

For the full semantics of each field, see the linked RFC. The preview spec does not restate normative behaviour; the RFCs are the canonical design source until a field is promoted into the normative SPEC body in a future PR.
The preview commits to these principles. They will carry into the eventual normative v4 promotion:
- Additive over v3.5.1. No v3.x field is removed, renamed, or repurposed in the preview. A v3.5.1 file is a valid v4-preview file by simply adding
previewand (optionally)profile_kind. - Never break the soul. Migration (when implemented) MUST be lossless, reversible, opt-in, and auditable. When in doubt, preserve the original and refuse to write, not invent a value. (See RFC-004.)
- Preserve unknown fields. Round-trip stability is a hard requirement. A v4-preview reader that does not understand a field MUST carry it through verbatim, not strip it.
- UX-first guardrails, invisible by default. Verification gates MUST NOT push agents toward compliance-form UX for ordinary creative work. Confirmation is the exception, not the default. (See RFC-002.)
- Human veto is sacred.
human_veto_policyoverrides any lower gate. No automatic mechanism (contract tests, verification artifacts, claim grounding) may lower a gate past ahuman_veto_policyfloor. - Pointer ledger, not a payload sink.

The Context Cost Benchmark is tracked under benchmarks/context_cost/ (see RFC). It measures the user-visible cost of repeated re-explanation across sessions and providers, with and without .klickd. The benchmark is reproducible and additive — running it does not require a v4-preview-aware reader. A profile MAY surface its own measured cost in the optional context_cost block; no spec semantics depend on this field.
The compatibility contract for the preview is:
- v3.x readers MUST IGNORE every §33 preview field they encounter. This is consistent with §6 (unknown-field forward compatibility) and with the explicit ignore rules in RFC-001 §3, RFC-002 §3, and RFC-004.
- v3.x writers MUST NOT emit any §33 preview field, and MUST NOT emit
klickd_version: "4.0". - v4-preview readers MUST preserve unknown fields verbatim when round-tripping. A preview reader that strips an unrecognised field is non-conforming.
- v4-preview readers MUST be able to read v3.x files without modification. A v3.5.1 file is a valid input to a v4-preview reader; the reader treats absent §33 fields as absent (not defaulted).
- No automatic migration. Reading an older file does not migrate it. Migration is a separate, user-initiated action governed by RFC-004 (not implemented in this preview).
- Preview ≠ GA. A future normative v4 release MAY change field names, structures, or semantics relative to this preview. Producers relying on
v4.0.0-preview.1MUST be prepared to round-trip into a stricter v4 GA shape later, ideally via the migration pipeline of RFC-004.
A permissive preview JSON Schema is shipped under:

These schemas use additionalProperties: true and only declare top-level hooks for the preview fields. Their purpose is to accept and preserve draft v4 structures, not to perform strict validation. They MUST NOT be used to reject a file that is otherwise a valid v3.5.1 file. See SCHEMA_INDEX.md for how the preview schemas sit alongside the normative v3 schemas.
For clarity, the following are explicitly out of scope for v4.0.0-preview.1 and any PR that lands the §33 surface:
- Strict v4 JSON Schema validation.
- Any migration tooling,
migration_reportwriter, or backup mechanism. - SDK version bumps (Python or TypeScript). The shipped SDKs remain at
3.5.1. - Any npm, PyPI, Zenodo, or DOI release.
- Any git tag, GitHub release, or changelog entry on the v3 line.
- Strict envelope-v4 cryptography changes. The envelope contract from v3.x continues to apply to any preview file that happens to be encrypted.
These items are deferred to subsequent preview iterations and the eventual normative v4 promotion.
This section restates, in one place, the privacy and stability invariants that already apply to a v4-preview file from SECURITY.md, the v3.x envelope contract, and the RFCs. It introduces no new normative behaviour; it exists so a v4-preview reader, writer, or auditor can find them without cross-referencing.
- Zero-server by default. A
.klickdfile is a self-contained artefact. Reading, writing, and migrating it MUST NOT require a network call (other than user-initiatedtool:*calls explicitly named inclaim_sources.prefer). A preview reader that silently uploads payload bytes to a remote service is non-conforming. - Client-side encryption. When
encrypted: true, the v3.x envelope contract (kdf,cipher, AAD over the six canonical envelope fields) continues to apply. The preview does not introduce a v4 envelope variant. Producers MUST NOT downgrade to a weaker KDF or cipher to accommodate preview fields. - A private
.klickdfile is not authoritative across independent parties. A single party's profile carries that party's claims about themselves. A second party reading the file MUST treat its assertions as self-reported, not as ground truth about anyone else. This is the same boundary that applies in v3.x; the preview's new fields (claim_sources,verification_artifacts,media_profile) do not raise their evidentiary weight. - No raw secrets in examples or fixtures. Examples in
SPEC.md,examples/,docs/rfcs/, andtests/MUST NOT include real API keys, real passphrases for non-test files, real tokens, real personal contact information, or real third-party credentials. The string"correct-horse-battery-staple"is reserved as the canonical test passphrase across the repository and is not a recommendation for production use. - Compartmentalisation is per-file. A
.klickdfile is the unit of compartmentalisation: one file per profile, project, or matter. A preview reader MUST NOT merge two files implicitly. Multi-file workflows (e.g. a learner profile + a separate work profile) are the user's choice, not the reader's. - Syntactic round-trip ≠ behavioural equivalence. The conformance tests under
tests/(positive and negative vectors, round-trip preservation) verify syntactic stability: a profile written, decrypted, and re-encoded across implementations produces the same byte-significant payload. They do not prove behavioural equivalence across models, providers, or model versions — two providers reading the sameagent_instructionsmay still respond differently. Producers SHOULD treat the format as a portable carrier of intent, not as a guarantee that downstream agent behaviour is identical. Future work on the Context Cost Benchmark (RFC-003) is the place where behavioural deltas are measured; the format itself remains a state contract, not a behaviour contract. - Provenance is preserved, not invented. A v4-preview reader MUST NOT add a
claim_sources.records[]entry, averification_artifacts[]entry, or anerror_journal[]entry on behalf of a tool that did not run, and MUST NOT backdate timestamps. When the truth is "this claim came from the user with no source", the conforming record is to leavesourceabsent or to setclaim_status: "assumed", not to fabricate a citation.
These invariants apply equally to the production v3.x line and the v4 preview track. The preview adds new fields; it does not relax existing privacy or stability rules.
While the field surface of §33 remains preview / non-normative, the
user-visible onboarding flow for any future v4 user.klickd

That document binds, in RFC 2119 language, the seven-step
user.klickd onboarding wizard with mandatory reload verification
(step 6). It is docs-only and does not introduce any new
on-the-wire field, schema, SDK API, vector, package version, Git
tag, or release. It does not relax or modify the §33.7
forward-compatibility contract or the §33.10 privacy invariants.
R4-P0-1 lands ahead of the wider P0-1 SPEC §33 field-surface
promotion because the empirical UX research
(docs/roadmap/V4-UX-DX-RESEARCH-NOTES.md)
shows the onboarding contract is the load-bearing piece that
determines whether .klickd v4 can reach non-developer users at
all. Strict schema (P0-2), SDK alignment (P0-3 / P0-4), and
vectors (P0-6) remain on their own tracks. The QR / deeplink
onboarding trigger remains out of scope for R4-P0-1 and is
governed by docs/ux/V4-ONBOARDING-QR-DEEPLINK.md.
When the §33 field surface is itself promoted to the normative SPEC
body in a future PR, the cross-reference inside
docs/spec/R4-P0-1-onboarding-wizard.md §3.2 MUST be updated to
point at the new normative SPEC section.
While the field surface of §33 remains preview / non-normative, the
user-visible error message contract for any future v4
user.klickd writer / reader is now constrained by a normative
companion document:
docs/spec/R4-P0-2-error-i18n-table.md— Normative (V4 P0).
That document binds, in RFC 2119 language, the user-facing message,
recommended user action, severity, recoverability, and safe-disclosure
behaviour for every KLICKD_E_* code surfaced in the R4-P0-1 wizard
contexts (passphrase creation, save / download, reload verification,
import / decrypt, legacy version / migration, corrupt / unsupported
file, locked policy violation, unsafe QR / deeplink). It covers
FR / EN / DE / LB (the four officially supported project
languages) and defines an EN fallback rule for any other UI
language.
R4-P0-2 is docs-only and does not modify the v3.x SDKs
(errors.py,
errors.ts), introduce any
new on-the-wire field, schema change, vector, package version, Git
tag, or release. It does not relax or modify the §33.7
forward-compatibility contract or the §33.10 privacy invariants.
R4-P0-2 lands now because R4-P0-1 §3.4 and §3.6 (passphrase confirmation failure and mandatory reload verification failure) already depend on this user-facing error contract. bump any package version, create any Git tag, or trigger any

modify the §33.7 forward-compatibility contract or the §33.10
privacy invariants — instead, it composes with both: the
unknown-field preservation rule of §33.7 is reaffirmed in
DEPRECATION_POLICY_V4.md §10
as unconditional regardless of lifecycle state.
R4-P0-4 lands now because the §33 field-surface promotion
(R4-P0-1) and the future strict v4 schema
(P0-2) both depend on a
credible exit path for v4 fields. Without R4-P0-4, every future
field addition is unbounded growth and the A4 (schema inflation)
anti-pattern (ROAD-TO-V4-GA §2.3 A4)
re-emerges. SDK alignment (i.e., implementing the developer-visible
deprecation log of DEPRECATION_POLICY_V4.md §4.2 in the SDKs as
a runtime signal) is deferred to a later SDK track and is not
in scope of this PR.
When the §33 field surface is itself promoted to the normative
SPEC body in a future PR, the removed-fields registry
(DEPRECATION_POLICY_V4.md §8)
MUST be moved into the normative SPEC body in the same PR, and
the cross-reference here MUST be updated to point at the new
normative SPEC section.
