URL Shortening Guide for Replit Apps

Current URL Structure

Your app URL is currently: https://652851ca-171b-4668-838d-40890418c4af-00-2m9syyk9qd57g.picard.replit.dev

Options to Shorten Your URL

1. Custom Domain (With Limitations)

  • Note: Custom domains are NOT available with autoscaling enabled
  • Requirement: Must disable autoscaling to add custom domain
  • How: Hosting tab → Disable "Autoscaling" → Then add custom domain
  • Trade-off: Choose between autoscaling OR custom domain (not both)
  • Cost: Free with your own domain

2. Replit Always-On with Static URL

  • Option: Upgrade to Replit Core plan
  • Cost: $7/month
  • Benefits: Your app stays online 24/7 with a consistent URL
  • URL Format: https://your-project-name.your-username.repl.co

3. URL Shortening Services

  • Quick Fix: Use services like:
    • bit.ly
    • tinyurl.com
    • short.link
  • Example: https://bit.ly/chonk9k-app
  • Limitation: Still redirects to the long URL

4. Deploy to Production Platform

  • Options:
    • Vercel (free tier available)
    • Netlify (free tier available)
    • Railway
    • Render
  • Benefits: Professional deployment with custom domains
  • URL: Your choice (e.g., chonk9k.vercel.app)

Recommended Steps Based on Your Needs:

Option A: Keep Autoscaling (Recommended for Production)

  1. Immediate: Use bit.ly/tinyurl.com for short sharing links
  2. Keep: Autoscaling enabled for better performance
  3. Accept: Longer Replit URL but better app reliability

Option B: Get Custom Domain (Less Scalable)

  1. Disable: Autoscaling in Hosting settings
  2. Add: Custom domain in Hosting tab
  3. Trade-off: Custom URL but no automatic scaling

Option C: External Deployment (Best Long-term)

  1. Deploy to: Vercel, Netlify, or Railway
  2. Get: Custom domain + full control
  3. Benefit: Professional hosting with scaling

Why Replit Limits This:

  • Autoscaling uses dynamic infrastructure
  • Custom domains need static DNS pointing
  • Technical limitation, not a bug

Quick Fix for Now:

Use a URL shortener service:

  • Go to bit.ly or tinyurl.com
  • Paste your long Replit URL
  • Get a short link like: bit.ly/chonk9k-app
  • Share the short link instead

This gives you a short, memorable URL while keeping autoscaling enabled.
